“EMPTY ROOM, FULL OF HERSELF” continues the artist’s ongoing research about the interplay of body and space. It’s part of a broader creative series „Ruumiantropoloogiad” (Anthropologies of Space), stemming from Vares’ personal experience during the pandemic in Rakvere, where she regularly spent time in an abandoned apartment to explore bodily presence in a space with no function. This act of spending time in what felt like emptiness turned into a creative practice not focusing on staging and performing, but on observation, presence, and illuminating what already exists.
“EMPTY ROOM, FULL OF HERSELF” continues this method. Vares enters an empty gallery space in constant dialogue with the outside world through a glass facade. In the first three weeks of August she inhabits the room, observes her thoughts, feelings, and desires, documenting herself and the surroundings. You can follow the process on Instagram @vares_space. On 27-30 August the resulting space and situation will open to the public. The space remains active 24/7. You can find detailed information shortly before the event from Tütar gallery’s website and the Facebook event.
Liis Vares is a choreographer and artist who has time and who gives time. Her practice centers on the contemporary body and space. She is driven by the movement of attention – a kind of invisible “dancer” that shapes the boundaries between the physical and the mental, the personal and the collective. By combining performing arts, installation, text, and digital environments, she challenges conventional forms and invites the audience to join her in a playful and unforced way.
“EMPTY ROOM, FULL OF HERSELF” is part of the SAAL Biennaal 2025 fiber program and is free for the public.
The project is supported by the Cultural Endowment of Estonia.
